your weekly salon mix from thom.

thom. – Vancouver men’s salon and barbershop presents Vol. 7 of its salon sound curated by Evo. This edition starts with Brownswood Recordings’ very own, by way of Johannesburg, Skinny Pelembe, with a nice number, fusing the finer elements of neo-soul, jazz and hip-hop. Up next is an instrumental hip-hop workout from Smth Savant, followed by MED and Guilty Simpson with some RnB infused hip hop, featuring the talents of Blu & J. Mitchell. Ivy Lab remixing Rhi’s ‘Night Driving’, keeps the deeper vibes flowing as we get into Japan’s Toshio Matsuura Group take on Rotary Connection’s cult classic ‘I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun”.

Two UK heavyweights, Eric Lau & Kaidi Tatham, team up on remix duties for LA-based multi-instrumentalists, Moonchild, adding some adequate textures to the band’s fusion of soul and new-school jazz, showcased on their track, ‘Run Away’ – the perfect segue into Sly5thAve’s cover of David McCallum’s ‘The Edge’ which is the well-known sample for Dr. Dre’s ‘The Next Episode’ – this version, however, is a beefed-up drum exercise with Swarvy on remix duties.

Next up is one of my fave RnB voices I discovered back in 2017, West London’s finest, Miss Cleo Sol and her seminal cut, ‘Why Don’t You’, followed by Nigerian born, Berlin-based male vocalist, Wayne Snow(One of the best male vocalists in the game right now), with Parisian born producer Neue Grafik on the boards with their collaborative effort, ‘Innervision’.

".... GAMM Records regulars, Turbojazz, come through with ‘Nebulosa’ - a jazzy Latin infused house number thats sure to get the blood pumping."

— Adam Petipas

Personal favorite here at thom., Buscrates, comes through with a nice up-tempo soul-infused hip-hop cut, featuring Fraizure Libretto, Akela & Red Ray, followed by another feature from Smith Savant – this time flexing his up-tempo boogie vibes on ‘Deep End Funk’. Luvless picks up where Savant left off with uber chilled out, jazzy house vibes, tipping his hat to one of my all-time faves, Sade, with ‘Deepest Taboo’.

Another personal favorite, Blue Lab Beats, makes an appearance with fellow UK stalwarts Ruby Francis and Ashley Henry on ‘Say Yes’ – a melting pot of RnB, jazz, hip-hop, and house. Gamm Records regulars, Turbojazz, come through with ‘Nebulosa’ – a jazzy Latin infused house number that’s sure to get the blood pumping. Stones Throw’s Mndsgn follows up with his signature boogie business on ‘Cosmic Perspective’.

The legend that is Mr. Fingers sets the tone for the next portion of the mix with a soulful house number featuring the vocal talents of Nicole Wray on ‘Praise to the Vibes’. Other house artists that make an appearance are Villes Wax, Gus Nobel, Felipe Gordon, Jus Tadi, Live Ones, Fold, Demuja, Harry Wolfman, Vincent Caira, Byron The Aquarius, OJPB, XOA & Contours.

The tempo keeps pushing forward as we go into more afro-beat territory with The Maghreban, The Mauskovic Dance Band, Ebo Taylor (an all-time favorite) and Basa Basa keeping the vibes on point.

Closing out the mix we have some chill, soulful vibes from some of the best in the game from around the globe: Budgie, Fatima, Lion Babe, Ryan Porter, and Kokoroko.

Hope you enjoy,

Evo
